RICHARD A. EKMAN has actively practiced in employee benefits for over 33 years. He is active in establishing and administering 401(k) plans for both companies and union groups, representing boards of trustees or employee pension and health and welfare plans, and assisting employer groups in creating and administering group health benefit purchasing coalitions and arrangements.

Richard Ekman obtained his undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Washington in 1971, and received his Juris Doctor from the University of Washington School of Law in 1974 He is licensed to practice before all state and federal courts in the State of Washington and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Since 1975, Mr. Ekman has devoted his practice to the creation and development of employee benefit plans and to the representation of plan sponsors and fiduciaries in matters concerning the administration and operation of those plans. Mr. Ekman's practice includes working with employers, employer associations, labor unions, and governments and agencies, in the creation of employee benefit programs designed to provide quality health and welfare benefits to employees and their families and pension and 401(k) plans for financial security in retirement. Mr. Ekman speaks frequently to employers and employee groups on retirement planning and group health insurance and benefit matters.


Legislative Updates:

House passes amended Family Leave bill

The last item on the House's agenda before Friday's legislative cutoff deadline was SB 5659, the Family Leave Insurance bill. A significantly scaled-back version of the legislation easily passed on a 61-36 vote and now must be reconciled with the stronger version that previously passed the Senate, 32-17.
